How to Keep Clothes Smelling Fresh in Drawers, Storage, and Closets

Are you wondering how to keep clothes smelling good in drawers or items in storage smelling fresh? Even if you use the best detergents and fabric cleaners on your clothing, you may notice they come away from your drawers, storage, and closets smelling odd. This is usually due to these tight spaces not being well ventilated, dark, dusty, and full of smelly shoes or dirty clothes. This odd smell is often nothing like your fresh grass and lavender detergent.
An organized, well-designed closet will help keep your clothes smelling fresh longer, but we’ve got a few other tips that will help keep your clothes smelling fresh day after day.
Save Your Old Dryer Sheets
Did you know your dryer sheets have more life to them after their first use in the laundry? Used dryer sheets have a pleasant smell that will have your tight spaces smelling fresh as well as the clothing inside them. Placing them strategically throughout your closet will help every piece of clothing come out smelling like it’s fresh out of the drier.
Air Fresheners
Non-Aerosol air fresheners are great tools for keeping your clothing fresh no matter how long it’s stored. It also doesn’t take much of a fragrance to make a big impact on a little space. When you put your clothing away, add a small amount of air freshener that imitates your favorite detergent, and your clothing will stay smelling like it was just washed yesterday.
Vodka
Vodka might seem like a weird way to keep your closet smelling fresh, but it actually is great for removing musty odors. Try mixing it into a spray bottle with water using a one-to-one ratio. Gently spritz your storage area spaces that are smelling stale or a few pieces of clothing, and your smells should disappear.
Essential Oils
Essential oils have many health benefits associated with them, but did you know they are also great for keeping your tight spaces smelling fresh. Essential oils are made from concentrated plant extracts like lavender, tea tree, peppermint, lemon, and many more. We recommend putting 10 to 20 drops of your favorite essential oil on a washcloth and tossing it in the dryer with your clothing before putting it away in your closet. This will leave your clothes smelling great for an extended period, so they are ready to be worn, smelling better than ever.
Bar of Soap
Consider using a bar of soap to help add a pleasant scent to your drawers. For this method, you will wrap your favorite smelling bar of unused soap with a paper towel and place it in with your clothing. This will provide long-lasting results and leave your clothes smelling fresh.
Baking Soda
It’s no secret that baking soda has odor-eliminating powers. It is commonly used in cleaning supplies, helps eliminate smells in refrigerators, and is even used to freshen up bad breath. However, I bet you didn’t know it can also be used in your closet! This common household product is great for trapping and deodorizing small spaces. Therefore, your closet could benefit from a container of baking soda.
