Methods of Storing Evening and Dress-Up Clothing: Storage Ideas for Hanging Clothes

2 minute read, by Closet America, on Apr 18, 2022

You might not wear them every day, but the dressy clothing in your closet deserves just as much attention and care as the rest of your wardrobe. You want to be able to store your dress clothes and pull them out, ready to wear, wrinkle-free, and looking great. Whether you need a new dress storage system, hanging space for your evening clothing, or better utilization of your closet space, we have the solution for you. The most important parts of preserving your clothing are:

Keep them clean – Your clothing should always be put away clean. If you have not cleaned your stains before putting them away, your clothing will become permanently stained and hard to repair. You will also never know when you might need to dress up, and the last thing you want to do is deal with cleaning dirty clothing right before a night of going out.

Keep your storage area cool, dark, and dry – Your clothing should be stored in a place where it won’t be exposed to sunlight, humidity, or heat. Too much of any of these elements will create an environment that could damage your favorite evening clothing. The last thing you want is your clothing to come out sun-bleached, smelling like mildew, or damaged. keep this in mind when brainstorming your dress up clothes storage ideas.

Best Ways for Storing Your Special Occasion Clothing

Hanger Storage

Hanging your fancier garments is the best way to keep them wrinkle-free. Investing in high-quality hangers will help uphold the quality of your favorite dress and will support any dress’s weight. We recommend using tissue paper to give your dress the extra protection it needs. Stuff tissue into the bodice, sleeves, and any other folds to help maintain the shape of the evening clothing while it sits in storage. If you use a formal dress garment bag, you should avoid plastic and use cloth so it can continue to breathe.

Box Storage

Box storage is a great method of storing clothes that helps keep your closet clean and tidy. We recommend using an acid-free, sturdy cardboard box for dresses. Between each piece of clothing, you should place a sheet of tissue to help retain the shape and prevent fiber breakage. If possible, keep your boxes off the floor to avoid potential damage.

Suit Storage

Suits should be hung up on a quality wooden hanger that arches forward slightly. This will help preserve the shape of your suit’s shoulders, allowing for a clean, comfortable wear every time. When hanging suit pants, the legs should be pulled through the hanger until the hem reaches the crotch. This will allow your suit to have little to no unnecessary creases and will be ready for its next wear.

Dress Shoes

Ideally, your dress shoes should remain on a different rack from your everyday wear. Shoe racks are the best way to organize and display your collection and will help keep them in prime condition. If you need to store your shoes further away, we recommend not using plastic since the leather will need to breathe. Plastic will also cause discoloring, so avoid it at all costs. Using sturdy cardboard boxes will help your shoes remain in prime condition, and we recommend tissue be used inside your box to help them retain their shape while in storage.
